A historic Apollo moon rock, which had been prominently displayed in the Oval Office for the past four years, has been removed as part of the Trump administration’s redesign of the West Wing. According to NASA, the lunar artifact will be returned to the space agency, though the reason for its removal remains unclear.
The moon rock, retrieved by Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972, served as a symbol of NASA’s ongoing lunar exploration efforts. A plaque beneath it highlighted NASA’s mission to return humans to the Moon and venture beyond into cislunar space.
Does the Moon Still Have a Place in Trump’s Space Policy?
While former President Donald Trump championed American leadership in space exploration, his long-term vision for human spaceflight remains uncertain. In his January 20 inaugural address, Trump stated:
“We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.”
Notably, he did not mention the Moon, raising questions about whether his administration would shift focus from lunar missions to a direct-to-Mars approach—a vision supported by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
NASA Leadership and Artemis’ Future
Despite speculation, Trump’s NASA Administrator nominee, billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, expressed support for both lunar and Martian exploration:
“Americans will walk on the Moon and Mars,” Isaacman stated during his nomination acceptance.
However, the removal of the moon rock may signal a de-emphasis on lunar exploration in favor of broader space goals.
Moon Rocks in the Oval Office: A Presidential Tradition
The removal of the moon rock under Trump contrasts with its recent revival under President Joe Biden.
During a 2023 visit by NASA’s Artemis II crew, astronaut Reid Wiseman acknowledged Biden’s role in restoring the lunar artifact to the Oval Office:
“We loved seeing the moon rock in the Oval Office, and we know that you asked to have it put in there,” Wiseman told Biden.
Biden, in response, expressed deep admiration for NASA’s upcoming return to the Moon:
“The closest I came to the Moon was my moon rock here,” he joked. “Fifty years later, it’s a big deal. I am so damn proud and envious of what you’re about to do—really and truly.”
A Legacy of Moon Rock Displays
Biden is the second president to display a moon rock in the Oval Office. The first was Bill Clinton, who requested an Apollo 11 sample remain in the White House after a 30th anniversary event in 1999.
Clinton described using the rock as a symbol of perspective during political debates:
“I put the moon rock on the table and when people got out of control, I’d say, ‘Wait, wait—see that moon rock? It’s 3.6 billion years old. Now we’re all just passing through here and we don’t have much time, so let’s calm down and figure out the right thing to do.’ And it worked every single time,” Clinton recounted in a 2015 National Geographic interview.
Brief Moon Rock Appearances Under Trump
Although the Trump administration ultimately removed the rock, it did make brief White House appearances:
- In 2017, a different Apollo 17 moon rock was displayed during the signing of Space Policy Directive 1, which directed NASA to return astronauts to the Moon before heading to Mars.
